Moo CowCarol Wahome and Wambui Njogu first met in high school in Nairobi and later at the American College in London where they were both studying for a degree in fashion design.
Carol graduated in 1992 and set up business in Nairobi making made to measure formal wear for young professional women. In addition to MOO COW, Carol has worked extensively in the Kenyan media as a fashion editor, art director and stylist for television, magazines and newspapers.
Wambui graduated in 1994 and designed for Trump Ltd of the Leslie Wise Group in London before returning to Nairobi. She started her own label in leather and fabrics. As well as Moo Cow, Wambui is a highly successful fashion production consultant for fashion retailers and production within Kenya.
Moo Cow was born in 2002 when the pair got together to make a hand beaded and embroidered leather bags for a local Christmas craft fair which proved very popular. From the bags the line was expanded to clothing and Moo Cow is now on its sixth major collection.
The name Moo Cow comes from a college as a nickname and seemed the natural choice when it came to naming of the company. While the name reflects the designer's fun approach to fashion, the acid test for any garment leaving the studio has always been "would I wear that".
A guiding principal has always been to address the concerns of the African woman when faced with "got to have" fashion items that don't quite work on a more curvaceous figure.
The designs are targeted at professional women with less than fashion magazine perfect bodies who still appreciate style with a sense of fun in their clothing.
Later this year, Moo Cow will open its much awaited flagship store in Nairobi featuring linen and suede garments for both men and women. The store will also feature other local designers, artists and occasional international guest designer.
